Bossier's large health care community is comprised of leaders in the medical field. State-of-the-art facilities allow area doctors, nurses, administrators, volunteers and support staff to employ the most advanced diagnostic testing, sophisticated treatment procedures, and cutting edge technology available to day.
Willis-Knighton, the only locally owned health system, has remained a constant leader in the field of health care since 1925. Operating four hospital facilities throughout Shreveport and Bossier City, as well as numerous health and education centers, Willis-Knighton is an active and supportive partner in the community. Among their contributions are taking free immunizations into neighborhoods, assisting police and fire departments with needed equipment, providing landscaping for public areas, and supporting the local symphony. In addition, Willis-Knighton offers public education and tutoring programs in area schools and assists school athletic programs.
Since 1894, the CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System has served the Bossier-Shreveport community. With a staff of more than 750 physicians, 3,000 employees and 600 volunteers, CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System provides comprehensive health care, including behavioral medicine, cardiovascular services, oncology, orthopedic and neurological services, primary care medicine, surgical services, and women's and children's services. Four hospitals - Bossier, Highland, Line Avenue and St. Mary Place – and two Quick Care Facilities- Bert Kouns and Viking Drive- are conveniently located throughout the cities. In addition to these facilities, the system offers primary care clinics, a foundation, an occupational health system, a community residential hospice, and a family-oriented wellness center.
Along with CHRISTUS Schumpert and Willis-Knighton, Shreveport is also home to LSU Health Science Center, Bio-Medical Research Institute, and Overton Brooks VA Medical Center. Our community also provides many outstanding rehabilitation, special needs and senior care facilities to treat the long-term needs of people of all ages.
The Shreveport Shriner's Hospital is a 45-bed pediatric orthopedic hospital providing comprehensive and complex orthopedic care to children at no charge. Built in 1922, the Shreveport Hospital was the first Shriner's Hospital and a totally new, modern facility was constructed on the same site in 1986. Today, there are 22 Shriner's Hospital for Children.
